astro

A solar system you can see and hear.

The Sun moves through the galaxy at about 230 km/s. As it moves, the planets do not orbit it in flat ellipses — they trace helices around its path. Most solar-system maps freeze the Sun. This one renders the actual motion, in 3D, at any moment in time.

Every body emits a tone whose pitch is derived from its orbital period. Pluto, with its 248-year orbit, sits in the bass; Mercury rises to the top. Together they form a slow chord that drifts as the planets move — Pythagoras called this the music of the spheres, and there is now the math and audio to actually render it.

When two bodies form an astrological aspect — conjunction, trine, square, opposition, sextile — their tones combine at a harmonic interval set by the angle between them. Conjunctions sound as unison, oppositions as the octave, the others as their natural overtones. Move forward in time and you can hear an opposition resolve into a trine.

Positions are real, not approximated. The scene holds the Sun, Moon, eight planets, the larger asteroids, and selected trans-Neptunian objects. Date is freely settable from 1900 to 2100. Tunings range from Western scales to non-octave systems built around any chosen fundamental.
